Glass Assignment – Blog Assignment #8

Product Lighting PHO 135 - Glass Assignment

A few weeks ago I had to photograph a glass in the studio, one with a white background and a black background.  You would think photographing a glass would be easy but technically it was very challenging.  After spending several hours in the studio I was able to accomplish the assignment.  When I think about each of the assigned projects they have been very thought provoking and really test your technical skills.  Seeing photography through the eyes of others is very difficult and I have found myself searching for the best way for me to technically accomplish assignments through my eyes.   It is not always easy but that’s the journey of photography.

Fireworks In Greensboro on July 4, – Blog Assignment #7

PHO 139 Blog Photo Week 7

As I pondered what I was going to photograph for my Blog #7, I decided that I was going downtown in Greensboro on July 4, to photograph the fireworks.  So as I prepared to go and not forgetting “in order to be a photography you have to think like a photography.”   So I grab all my gear including tripod and headed out.  I had never attended a firework event in Greensboro so I arrived downtown about an hour before the kickoff.  As I searched for a good spot to photograph from I decided I would just wait and see.  When the fireworks started I had to immediately change locations and found out there was not going to be a great location to photograph the fireworks.  So I just made the best of a bad situation.   The fireworks lasted about 15 – 20 minutes and were the worst I had ever witness.  So as I entered my housing development all I could see was the sky lighting up with fireworks and I jumped out and photographed a few pictures and that is what I am posting for this blog. So the bottom line is I wasn’t totally defeated.  Living in the Washington, DC area for over 30 years, I am a witness that the best “real fireworks” by far is at the Washington Monument and you could see them for miles all over the city.

A Nature’s Beauty – Zinnia Flowers Blog Assignment #6

PHO 139 Blog Photo Week 6

This week’s Introduction to Digital Imaging,  I wanted to share an outdoor nature picture which show the beauty of the colorful zinnia flowers with the butterfly enjoying it also. Zinnias are popular garden flowers because they come in a wide range of flower colors and shapes, and they can withstand hot summer temperatures, and are very easy to grow from seeds.   When we look all around you cannot help but see all God’s beauty and creations right before our eyes to enjoy.   With the upcoming Fourth of July on Tuesday I wish everyone a blessed vacation week.

Fabric Design #3

Our Product Lighting Class was given a Fabric Assignment and we had to photograph three different pattern-layouts/designs. The selection of the fabric was the choice of each student. I selected this fabric because I loved the colors and thought it was unique with the various colors and design. We had to photograph three different designs using the same fabric for the assignment. The photographs were done in the studio using the Modeling and the 750 Lights. The first photograph was my favorite of the three. Lighting fabric was interesting and required a little different technique. In our class critique it was very interesting to see all the different approaches and unique designs from each student. The Fabric Assignment was very interesting and challenging to properly light fabrics. Great learning experience!

Available Light With Non-Powered Modifier – Blog #4

PHO 135 Available Light Assignment

A few weeks ago our photography class was given an assignment to photograph an image utilizing only available light and a basic non-powered modifiers.  We had to create an interesting image of a product of our choice.  The photograph I am posting this week was my final submission photographed outside utilizing available natural light early in the morning with a white board as my modifier. I photographed this product because I loved the color, design, and texture in the vase and the metal topper/accent just added a touch that worked very well together.

Design II – Spring Final Portfolio Blog #3

Final Portfolio AssignmentIn the Spring Semester for the Design II class each student had to determine a theme to tell their story for their Final Portfolio Project.  The project consisted of six photographs that would clearly tell our story through critiques of the six different images.   Determining what my theme was going to be centered around took me into two different directions.  Finally, I decided to focus on a hobby I had for a number of years in designing silk floral designs for weddings and special events prior to my retirement.  My photograph featured in this post is one of my favorite floral designs photographed in the studio with gold metallic paper as a reflector to enhance the background that added a special look to the photo.  Photography has so many different ways of enhancing and providing effects to our images.   Experimenting with the different modifiers is the only way that you can truly see the results and appreciate what they can add to a photograph.  This photograph also creates a special mood and tone for me in this image. I absolutely love the beauty of flowers!

The Beauty of Photography Blog #2!

Photo Assignment #4 The Still Life

I share this picture because of the inspiration I get every day when there is always something new growing in my flower garden.  When I look all around I see the beauty of nature in the spring flowers, summer blooms, and the never ending double knockout roses that last until fall.  So with each season there’s always a change in what you see and what you experience in life and with all the things around you.   Life is just that way and you have to take it one day at a time.  You can’t change what happen yesterday, but you can be better prepared for today, tomorrow, and days to come.   Over the last several weeks  I stopped and took the time to  Photograph some of the flowers in my front yard.  My flowers provides me so much inspiration with all the different colors  blooming in their own time and way week after week.   Photography is pretty much the same way you bloom day by day in your own time and in your own way.   There is always something new that make you better day by day.  I am encouraged and hope you are also.
